Director Oliver Stone on Sunday said he thinks President Trump is “boxed in” by the Russia investigation because the country has been demonized.
“We’ve demonized Russia to a place where it’s almost impossible to talk,” Stone told CNN’s “Reliable Sources. “Trump has been boxed in by this investigation. It’s a shame because we need to talk.”
Stone apparently referred to the ongoing FBI probe into allegations Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 U.S. elections.

Stone, who spent the last two years interviewing the Russian president for his series “The Putin Interviews” on Showtime, said he wanted to let the leader speak for himself.
“I can’t change his mind. I can show his mind,” Stone said of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I can show the American people, allow them to hear it. Even if it’s a denial and they don’t want to hear that, they should because he speaks in a certain way.”
Stone emphasized the importance of reading body language in his interviews with Putin.
“I would like to see detente of some kind or understanding,” he said of relations between the United States and Russia.
