Joining the Obamas was senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, who helped the family prepare meals for distribution to shelters around the area.
Many members of the Obama administration undertook similar ventures on the holiday. After delivering remarks at the National Action Network’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast, Vice President Joe Biden served guests hot lunch at SOME (So Others Might Eat), a non-profit that assists Washington’s impoverished. Joining Biden in volunteering at SOME was Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki.
Other Cabinet secretaries undertaking service projects included Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew, who packed clothes for homeless veterans at the VA Medical Center in Washington, and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, who served food at Food and Friends, a D.C. organization that delivers meals and groceries to those battling HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other severe illnesses.
