Warren slams GOP Sen. Burr as ‘puppy on a leash’ for backing Trump

Liberal firebrand Elizabeth Warren on Tuesday continued her onslaught against GOP lawmakers backing Donald Trump, calling Sen. Richard Burr (N.C.) a “puppy on a leash” for supporting the Republican presidential nominee.

{mosads}The Massachusetts senator, continuing her tour of swing states in support of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and down-ballot Democrats, sought to tie the vulnerable Burr to Trump and his numerous controversies.

“Richard Burr said, make no mistake, ‘I am fully supportive of Donald Trump.’ No dancing around that one,” Warren said at a rally in Raleigh, N.C.

“So Donald Trump called Latinos rapists and murderers, and Burr fully supports Trump. Trump called African-Americans thugs, and Burr fully supports Trump. … Trump calls women fat pigs and bimbos and brags about sexually assaulting women, and Richard Burr is like a puppy on a leash, sticking right there with Donald Trump.”

Warren continued: “You know, if Richard Burr is just going to be Donald Trump’s lap dog, then let him go off and do that. But the people of North Carolina need a strong, independent woman to fight for the families of North Carolina, and that is Deborah Ross.”

Ross, Burr’s Democratic challenger, and Burr are locked in a tight race as Republicans look to maintain control of the Senate. In a RealClearPolitics polling average, Burr leads Ross by 3 points, 45 percent to 42 percent.

The Clinton campaign has sent surrogates like Warren to swing states in hopes of shoring up support for Clinton and increasing numbers for Democrats in the House and Senate.

Warren similarly went after another vulnerable senator Monday, Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.).

At a rally in the state, Warren called Ayotte “weak” and encouraged voters to support New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan (D) to replace her in the Senate.
