McConnell says Gomez key to ‘taking back the Senate’ in fundraising pitch
{mosads}In a new email sent to supporters, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says the NRSC will triple any donations up to $32,000.
“A Republican majority in the Senate begins with your support today,” McConnell writes. “Securing a victory for Gabriel Gomez in the Massachusetts Senate special election on June 25th is crucial to taking back the Senate and removing Harry Reid from power.”
The email comes after at least one Gomez adviser, Brad Todd, questioned the party’s commitment to its candidate in the Massachusetts special election to replace Secretary of State John Kerry (D).
“Do conservatives have nerve to try & win? Will mod R donor class put its money where mouth is? Is this a party or therapy session? #MASEN ?s” he tweeted on Thursday.
Following multiple polls that show Gomez keeping Markey’s lead to single digits, the NRSC sent staff to Massachusetts to help Gomez’s campaign. But neither the party’s campaign apparatus nor any other GOP outside groups have yet spent money for him.
And this new email plays directly into one of the main arguments made by Democratic candidate Rep. Edward Markey’s campaign against Gomez: That he’s just another Republican, looking to go to Washington to oppose President Obama’s agenda.
The president remains extremely popular in Massachusetts, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) tied Scott Brown to the national GOP during the 2012 campaign in an effort that ultimately helped unseat him.
Indeed, national Democrats and Markey’s campaign blasted the NRSC email sent out to supporters later Friday.
“Mitch McConnell’s diving headfirst into the Massachusetts Senate election to raise campaign cash for Gabriel Gomez because Gomez in Washington would bring national Republicans one step closer to controlling the Senate and enacting a radical right-wing agenda that blocks commonsense gun laws, protects tax breaks for millionaires and ends a woman’s right to choose,” said Markey spokesman Andrew Zucker of the email.
