Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) predicated Friday that congressional Republicans could clash with Donald Trump over the direction of the country should the businessman become president.
“I imagine on certain issues that if he is elected you are going to have congressional Republicans who are going to be pushing the country in a different direction than the Republican president,” Rubio told NBC’s Hallie Jackson.
{mosads}He added while Trump is the GOP presidential nominee, there is also a perception that there “is going to be leadership out of the congressional branch.”
Though congressional Republicans are largely supporting Trump in November, they’ve also been quick to distance themselves from some of his policies and controversial rhetoric.
GOP leaders have also floated that they could act as a check on a Trump presidency. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said earlier this year that the real estate mogul would have “constraints” if he wins in November.
Trump is currently trailing Clinton by more than 6 points nationally and by more than 4 points in Florida, according to the RealClearPolitics polling index.
But Rubio, who is also up for reelection, said Friday that he believes Trump is doing better in his home state then “people think he’s doing, but we’ll see.”
“You know, it is going to be a very close race,” Rubio added. “I don’t think he can win if he doesn’t win Florida.”
