Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson (R) and his Democratic challenger Russ Feingold clashed over their parties’ presidential nominees at their first debate Friday.
Fein gold challenged Johnson to denounce Donald Trump in the wake of mounting allegations of sexual misconduct.
“This is one of these times where you have to be an American first, not a politician running for office, not a Republican or Democrat, but an American who’s worried about the future of our great country,” Feingold said, according to the Star Tribune.
Johnson said he hasn’t been shy about disagreeing with Trump and said he wouldn’t defend “the indefensible.”
“But I will hold whoever is our president accountable,” he said.
He flipped the issue around on Feingold, saying that he “must be the last American who thinks Hillary Clinton is trustworthy.”
Johnson said Clinton should be disqualified for how she handled the Benghazi attacks and her private email server.
As Senate debates play out, candidates and incumbents are likely to spar over Clinton and Trump, who are both viewed very unfavorable by most voters.
