Poll: Toomey, McGinty tied in Pa. Senate race

Sen. Pat Toomey (R) and Democratic challenger Katie McGinty are tied in Pennsylvania’s competitive Senate race, a poll released Tuesday shows.

{mosads}In the Monmouth University Poll, Toomey and McGinty are tied at 46 percent support, with 3 percent giving their support to Libertarian Edward Clifford and 5 percent who are undecided.

In the same poll in August, McGinty led 45 percent to 41 percent among likely voters.

Tuesday’s results show Toomey leading among independent voters, 50 percent to 35 percent.

The race is viewed as a toss-up as Republicans look to maintain control of the Senate come November.

In a RealClearPolitics polling average, McGinty has a 2-point lead over Toomey, 43.5 percent to 41.5 percent.

The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 among 402 Pennsylvania residents and has a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.

It also showed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton leading Republican rival Donald Trump, 50 percent to 40 percent. McGinty has repeatedly tried to tie Toomey to his party’s standard-bearer, who suffers from low approval ratings.
