Cruz backs Rubio for Senate

Ted Cruz announced his support of Marco Rubio’s Senate bid just hours after the Florida senator reversed course and said he would run for reelection.

“Marco is a friend and has been an ally in many battles we have fought together in the Senate. I’m glad to support him in his bid for re-election,” he said Wednesday in a statement from his political office.

“Marco is a tremendous communicator and a powerful voice for the American Dream. At this time of great challenges, we very much need strong leaders in the Senate who will fight to restore economic growth, to defend our constitutional liberties, and to ensure a strong national security for our nation.”

Cruz joins a unified front of congressional Republicans backing Rubio’s bid, which he announced after months of telling the media he would not run for reelection.

The Washingtonian reports that Rubio on Tuesday had solicited Cruz to release a statement calling on him to run for reelection in the hopes of building momentum ahead of his announcement.

But the publication said Rubio’s former rival in the GOP presidential primary demurred out of respect for Rep. Ron DeSantis, a conservative Florida lawmaker who had been vying to fill Rubio’s seat but dropped out after Rubio said he would run again.
