Former Iowa lt. gov wins Senate primary, to face Grassley
Former Iowa Lt. Gov. Patty Judge (D) is projected to win the Iowa Senate primary, setting her up to face Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) in November.
Judge defeated state Sen. Rob Hogg and two other Democratic candidates, Tom Fiegen and Bob Krause.
{mosads}She jumped into the race in early March, saying she was motivated by Senate Republicans’ blockade of President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.
Hogg received support from most state Democratic lawmakers, but Judge was urged to run by party leaders in Washington and was endorsed by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).
Grassley is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, putting him at the center of the Supreme Court battle. This has made him a Democratic target, but Democrats concede it’ll be an uphill battle to unseat him.
The popular GOP senator has been reelected by wide margins and has historically outperformed the entire ballot even in presidential years.
But Grassley has acknowledged that this will be his toughest reelection race to date.
