An outside super-PAC allied with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says it will back Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) if he changes his mind and runs for reelection.
“Florida is a huge financial commitment,” Steven Law, a former chief of staff to McConnell who runs the Senate Leadership Fund, according to The Wall Street Journal.
{mosads}“We felt confident about betting on Rubio back in 2010 and would do it again in a heartbeat, but right now it’s hard to imagine making that same investment without him as our candidate,” Law added.
Some Republicans are openly urging Rubio to run for reelection in Florida in a bid to maintain majority control of the Senate. Rubio has offered public reservations about running. The filing deadline is June 24.
Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, of which Rubio is a member, said in a statement Thursday that he “strongly encouraged him to reconsider his decision and seek re-election.”
“I don’t think anything’s going to change,” he told reporters.
Several Republicans are running for Rubio’s seat, including Florida Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, a friend of Rubio.
“Marco’s already said that he’s not running for reelection,” Lopez-Cantera told the Miami Herald on Thursday night.
