Landrieu ad: Cassidy wants tax breaks ‘for millionaires like himself’

The campaign for Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) released a new ad on Monday accusing Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) of voting to cut funding for schoolchildren “to pay for a tax break for millionaires like himself.”

“Every morning I say a prayer for my kids,” says a mother in the ad who is taking children to school. “I just want them to be happy and to do their best. Bill Cassidy is a doctor, but he still voted in Congress to cut $86 million from Louisiana Schools to pay for a tax break for millionaires like himself. I don’t know what kind of doctor would do that to my kids.” 

{mosads}“I’m Mary Landrieu and I approve this message because Louisiana’s children should never pay the price for a millionaire’s tax cut,” the Louisiana Democrat says at the end.

The 30-second television ad is a slight departure for the campaign, which has in previous ads sought to portray Cassidy as bumbling and incompetent.

A Democrat close to the Landrieu campaign told The Hill last week that Cassidy remains a relative unknown in the state, and that the ads could still be an effective way of defining the Republican candidate ahead of the Dec. 6 runoff. 

Still, Landrieu trails Cassidy badly in the polls with just two weeks to go before voters return to the polls for the runoff election. Both candidates are now focused on turning out the early vote among their supporters. Early voting started on Saturday.
