Iowa Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst will see a high-profile endorsement from former President George H. W. Bush on Saturday, the Des Moines Register reported.

Bush has doled out a handful of endorsements this cycle despite typically staying out of the political fray. His backing could give Ernst a boost in a tight election against Rep. Bruce Braley (R-Iowa) for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa).

{mosads}”I am very impressed by Joni Ernst’s dedication and service to our country,” Bush said in a statement to the Register.

“She is a soldier and independent leader who proved her mettle leading 150 Iowan troops in Iraq — and who will continue fighting for those who have worn our nation’s uniform. I have total confidence Joni will make Iowa proud in the United States Senate, and I’m very pleased to endorse her.”

Ernst, an Iraq War veteran, has also been endorsed by former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the Register reported.

Independent analysts have rated the contest between Ernst and Braley a toss-up. It is one of several key races that will decide control of the Senate.
