Former Hawaii governor endorses Schatz over Hanabusa

Former Hawaii Gov. John Waihee (D) has endorsed Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), giving him a potential boost in his race against Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii).

{mosads}The endorsement could help Schatz bridge the ethnic divide that often dominates Hawaii Democratic politics.

Waihee was the first native Hawaiian to serve as governor of the state, from the mid-1980s until 1994. He’s since served as part of Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s (D) administration as head of its Office of Hawaii Affairs.

Abercrombie appointed Schatz to the Senate.
