Mich. Republican pokes fun at ‘war on women’
Former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land (R) is out with the first ad of her Senate campaign, making fun of Democrats’ “war on women” attacks against her record.
{mosads}”I’m Terri Lynn Land. Congressman Gary Peters and his buddies want you to believe I’m waging a war on women. Really? Think about that for a moment,” she says before taking a sip from a coffee mug, shaking her head and checking her watch.
“I’m Terri Lynn Land, and I approve this message because as a woman, I might know a little more about women than Gary Peters,” she concludes.
Land and Peters are locked in a tight race in the swing state.
Peters and his Democratic allies have been attacking Land for opposing equal pay legislation.
In a recent Michigan visit, President Obama criticized her for saying in 2010 that women are “more interested in flexibility in a job than pay,” arguing she’s out of touch with working women.
The Service Employees International Union just released an ad slamming Land for opposing Democratic initiatives like ObamaCare, which the group says help women.
“Insurance companies could go back to charging women more. It would be harder for women to get equal pay, and Land would even cut access to preventative care like mammograms,” the ad’s narrator says.
Peters’s campaign fired back against Land’s ad.
“Given Land’s track record of opposing equal pay for women, and supporting a plan that would ban common forms of birth control, like the pill, and cut access to preventative care, like mammograms, Michigan women deserve more than a 30 second gimmick,” Peters for Michigan communications director Haley Morris said. “Gary is the only candidate who has proven he will fight for equal pay, flexibility, and women’s health care, and that’s just what he will do in the U.S. Senate.”
