Poll: Warren has big lead on Brown

Democrat Elizabeth Warren has opened up her largest lead yet over incumbent Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), according to a Suffolk University poll released Tuesday.

{mosads}Warren takes 53 percent support over Brown at 46 percent support, an increase from her 4-percentage-point lead in a September poll. A Boston Globe poll released on Monday had shown Brown leading Warren slightly, by 2 percentage points, but well within the margin of error, indicating a statistically-tied race.

But the Suffolk poll is more in line with the RealClearPolitics average of polls, which shows Warren up by 4.5 percent, 50.5 to 46.

Warren has posted much of the momentum in the race in recent days, with a number of nonpartisan political handicappers — including The Hill — giving Warren an advantage, moving the race from a toss-up to “lean Democratic.”

But there’s still time for the race to shift in the final days, as the two are expected to meet for a fourth and final debate sometime this week.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, both candidates proposed canceling the debate to allow for attention to be focused on cleaning up the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, which pummeled much of the East Coast on Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Warren’s campaign proposed rescheduling the debate for Thursday, but Brown’s campaign has not yet proposed an alternate date. A head-to-head meeting so close to the election could be pivotal in a race this close.

The poll of 600 likely voters has a 4 percent margin of error, and was conducted from Oct. 25-28.
