President-elect Trump tweets: ‘Such a beautiful and important evening!’

Donald Trump in his first tweet as president-elect said the “forgotten man and woman will never be forgotten again.”

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton had led Trump by about 3 points in the national polling averages as Election Day dawned Tuesday. The Republican repeatedly insisted before his victory, however, that pollsters were misreading his support among voters.

Trump’s success capped off a major night for the GOP, with the party keeping its majorities in both the House and Senate.

Tuesday’s election ended a long and at-times bitter 2016 race between Clinton and Trump over America’s future.

Trump, a political newcomer, cast himself as a change agent who would upend the establishment politics Clinton embodied.

Clinton, in contrast, touted her long public service history as an edge over Trump, arguing he lacked the experience and temperament for the White House.

Trump frequently used Twitter during the campaign as a means of needling critics and connecting with voters without using traditional media platforms.

The businessman’s social media use at times resulted in headaches for his campaign, with aides racing to keep up with unexpected or controversial tweets.
