Clinton wins Virginia
Hillary Clinton is projected to defeat Donald Trump in Virginia, picking up 13 electoral votes and providing the third straight Democratic win in a formerly deep-red state.
{mosads}Clinton enjoyed a comfortable polling lead for months in the state, but a surge by Trump in late October put the race in doubt. One final-week poll even showed the Republican nominee leading the state by 3 points.
Both candidates had pulled advertising from Virginia over the summer, but in the waning days of the campaign, Trump launched a multi-million dollar ad buy in the state and Clinton with a buy of her own as polls tightened.
Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine — a current senator and former governor in Virginia and a popular statewide figure — held election eve rallies in the state.
Republicans won Virginia in 10 straight presidential elections between 1968 and 2004. But President Obama turned the state blue in 2008 and won it again in 2012.
Changing demographics in fast-growing Northern Virginia communities have helped turn the Old Dominion purple in recent years despite areas in the southwestern reaches of the state that remain staunchly red.
