Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) revealed Tuesday morning that he voted for Donald Trump, despite tensions with the GOP presidential nominee.
{mosads}”I stand where I stood all fall and all summer. In fact, I already voted here in Janesville for our nominee last week in early voting,” Ryan told “Fox & Friends” after being asked where he stood on Trump.
“I’m supporting our entire Republican ticket. I have been all along. My focus personally right now is saving our House majority.”
Ryan didn’t appear to embrace Trump and didn’t mention his name in the interview, only referring to him as “our nominee.”
However, he attacked Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton over news Friday that the FBI had uncovered in an unrelated investigation emails that may be “pertinent” to the bureau’s previous investigation into Clinton’s private email server and whether the former secretary of State mishandled classified information.
“The point I keep trying to make for younger voters who did not live through the 1990s — this is what life with the Clintons looks like. It’s always a scandal, one after the other.”
Ryan angered Trump and his allies last month when he told House Republicans he would no longer defend or campaign for the GOP nominee.
Trump will campaign with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) in Ryan’s home state on Tuesday, but the Speaker said he would not attend.
“I just heard about it 10 minutes ago. I didn’t know that,” Ryan said.
Asked whether he would change his mind about campaigning for or with Trump, Ryan said, “I haven’t changed anything.”
“I’m just focusing on my primary responsibility, which is saving our House majority. … That’s what the Speaker of the House does. My job is to make sure Nancy Pelosi does not return as Speaker of the House.”
