Watergate prosecutor slams Trump for saying Clinton emails ‘bigger than Watergate’

Former U.S. Attorney Nick Akerman, who prosecuted the Watergate case, blasted Donald Trump for comparing the Hillary Clinton email case to the infamous political scandal.

Akerman criticized the claim, calling it “absurd” and lacking evidence.

“Donald Trump’s statement that this is bigger than Watergate is totally absurd,” the former prosecutor said, according Celeste Katz, a reporter at Mic.

“There is no evidence of any violation of law. For Trump to reach that conclusion based on a total lack of evidence is reminiscent of the innuendo spread by Joseph McCarthy in the early 1950s.”

He was also critical of the FBI Director James Comey for sending a vague letter to members of Congress about the new probe.

“He had no business writing to Congress about supposed new emails that neither he nor anyone in the FBI has ever reviewed,” he said. “It is not the function of the FBI Director to be making public pronouncements about an investigation, never mind an investigation based on evidence that he acknowledges may not be significant.”
