Texas poll: Trump holds narrow lead over Clinton

Donald Trump has a narrow 3-point lead over Hillary Clinton in Texas, according to a new University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll.

{mosads}Trump is favored by 45 percent of likely voters in the state, and Clinton is backed by 42 percent.

Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson is backed by 7 percent, and Green Party nominee Jill Stein is supported by 2 percent.

Trump leads among men, 46 percent to 39 percent. The two candidates are tied among women, with each taking 45 percent support.

Clinton, the Democratic nominee, has the support of 93 percent of Democrats, and Trump, the GOP nominee, is baked by 83 percent of Republicans. Trump also has the support of 46 percent of Texas independents. Clinton is only backed by 19 percent of independents.

Among white voters, Trump has a significant lead over Clinton, 57 percent to 28 percent. Clinton leads among black voters, 95 percent to 4 percent, and among Hispanic voters, 56 percent to 33 percent.

Forty-seven percent of voters who support Trump say they want the GOP nominee to become president, but 53 percent of Trump supporters say they are backing the Republican nominee because they don’t want Clinton to win the White House.

Among those supporting Clinton, 66 percent say they want the Democratic nominee to become president and 34 percent say they are backing Clinton to prevent a Trump presidency.

The poll was conducted from Oct. 14 to 23 among 1,200 registered voters. The overall margin of error is 2.83 percentage points. Among likely voters, the margin of error is 3.16 points.

According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, Trump has a 4-point lead over his Democratic rival in Texas, 44.8 percent to 40.8 percent.
