Libertarian VP nominee: Trump makes me fear for my country
Libertarian vice presidential candidate Bill Weld issued a scathing denunciation of Donald Trump on Tuesday, saying Trump “actually makes me fear for the ultimate well-being of the country.”
“In the final days of this very close race, every citizen must be aware of the power and responsibility of each individual vote,” Weld said in a statement.
{mosads}“This is not the time to cast a jocular or feel-good vote for a man whom you may have briefly found entertaining. Donald Trump should not, cannot, and must not be elected President of the United States,” Weld said.
The former Republican governor of Massachusetts was rumored last month to have been considering dropping out due to a fear that the Libertarian ticket could throw the election to Trump, whom he has repeatedly spoken out against.
Weld and his running mate Gary Johnson denied the rumor, though Weld later told the Boston Globe that he planned to spend the rest of the election focusing on attacking Trump.
Weld reaffirmed in his statement Tuesday that he plans to stay on the ticket through Election Day but felt that he needed to voice his belief that Trump could not serve as president without “becoming unhinged and unable to perform competently the duties of his office.”
Trump does not have enough self-control, discipline or “emotional depth” to be president, Weld said.
“When challenged, he often responds as a child might,” said the former governor. “He makes a sour face, he calls people by insulting names, he waves his arms, he impatiently interrupts. Most families would not allow their children to remain at the dinner table if they behaved as Mr. Trump does.”
