Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) says Donald Trump’s claims voter fraud may alter the presidential election’s outcome are implausible.
While Blunt, who is in an unexpectedly close reelection race, says “there is some voter fraud in the country,” he believes Trump is off base with suggestions of a “rigged” national election.
{mosads}“Frankly, having been the chief election official in Missouri when I was the first Republican secretary of state in over 50 years, we worked hard to get things out of the system that may be creeping back in,” Blunt said, as first reported by CNN.
“But at a national level, [it’s] highly unlikely because of how diverse the system is and how many different administrators are out there even though there are 50 chief election officials that watch the election process.”
Blunt said political candidates like Trump are, however, entitled to their skepticism.
“There are things to be concerned about, there are things to watch in an election, but I think the results are likely to be pretty clear on Election Day. Hopefully the result is a Donald Trump victory and a Congress that he can work with.”
Trump refused to say during this year’s third and final presidential debate, held Wednesday, that he would accept the presidential election’s results, drawing criticism from members of both major parties.
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton pounced on Trump’s remarks, accusing him of undermining America’s government.
“This is how Donald thinks. And it’s funny, but it’s really troubling,” she said. “That is not the way our democracy works.”
Trump on Thursday clarified he would “totally accept” winning the presidency or a “clear election result” without evidence of fraud.
The billionaire has repeatedly said the election process and media are being “rigged” in Clinton’s favor.
