Kaine ‘pleasantly surprised’ hometown paper didn’t endorse Trump
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) on Sunday said he wasn’t upset that his hometown paper, the Richmond-Times Dispatch, endorsed Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson for president.
{mosads}”I was kind of pleasantly surprised when my hometown paper made that endorsement,” Kaine, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, said on “Fox News Sunday.”
“Because my hometown paper — and it’s a great paper, I love the guys — but they’ve never endorsed me in any contested race I’ve ever been in, ever, in 22 years in elected office.”
Kaine said what the paper does is “endorse Republicans.”
“This is the first time that they have chosen not to endorse the Republican ticket for president in my memory, certainly in all the years I’ve lived in Richmond,” Kaine said.
“So the fact that they could not see clear to endorse the Republican ticket in Richmond, that is the news.”
The Richmond Times-Dispatch last month endorsed Johnson.
In its editorial, it said neither Kaine’s running mate, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, nor GOP nominee Donald Trump, met “the fundamental moral and professional standards we have every right to expect of an American president.”
