Khizr Khan, the father of a slain U.S. soldier, released a statement following the second presidential debate saying that the only thing Donald Trump has ever sacrificed is “the truth.”
{mosads}Khan, who gave a fierce rebuke of the GOP nominee at this summer’s Democratic National Convention, pushed back on Trump’s claim that he was always opposed to the Iraq War.
During Sunday’s debate, Trump claimed that Khan’s son, who was killed while serving in Iraq, would still be alive if the real estate mogul was president when the U.S. voted for the war.
“We know that our son, Capt. Humayun Khan, is an American hero. We also know that Donald Trump is not telling the truth when he says he was against the Iraq War,” Khan said in a statement read by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow during the broadcast.
“Our son served this country with honor and distinction and gave the ultimate sacrifice. The only thing that Donald Trump sacrifices is the truth.”
Trump publicly feuded with Khan in the wake of his speech at the convention in July.
During Sunday’s debate, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton chided Trump over never apologizing for his comments about the Gold Star family, including speculating whether Khan’s wife did not speak because she as not “allowed” to.
But Trump hit back and attacked Clinton for her 2002 vote to authorize the Iraq War.
“Unlike her, who voted for the war…I would not have had people in Iraq because Iraq was a disaster,” Trump said at the debate. “So he would be alive today.”
Clinton has since called her vote a “mistake.” Trump has repeatedly argued that he’s been against the war from the outset, which fact checkers have debunked.
