Poll: Clinton tops Trump by 6 points

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has a 6-point edge over Republican opponent Donald Trump, a new national poll released Tuesday finds.

{mosads}A new NBC News/SurveyMonkey online poll found that Clinton tops Trump, 46 percent to 40 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson takes 9 percent, while Green Party nominee Jill Stein has 3 points.

In a two-way match-up, Clinton breaks 50 percent but still leads Trump by 6 points.

Clinton leads among women, 52 percent to 34 percent. In the breakdown, she leads women who have never been married by a large margin but has a much slimmer lead among married women.

Trump leads Clinton, 52 percent to 35 percent, among married men, but when it comes to men who have never been married, the former secretary of State recaptures the lead, 51 to 28 percent.

Clinton leads Trump by double digits among mothers, while fathers support Trump by a similar margin.

Her lead with women comes after a rough week for Trump, in which he publicly feuded with former Miss Universe winner Alicia Machado. Clinton brought her up during the first presidential debate, pointing out that Trump in the past had called her “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping.”

Following the debate, the real estate mogul made remarks surrounding Machado’s weight and went on an early-morning Twitter rant alleging that Machado has a sex tape.

The same survey also found that a large swath of likely voters are unfamiliar with both the nominees’ running mates. Forty percent said they don’t know enough about Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), while 33 percent also feel the same way about Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R).

The poll was conducted Sept. 26–Oct. 2 and surveyed 26,925 likely voters with a margin of error of 1 percentage point.
