Poll: Clinton leads Trump by 4 points nationally

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton leads her Republican rival by 4 points nationally, a new poll released Monday evening shows. 

{mosads}In the CBS News/New York Times poll, Clinton leads Trump 45 percent to 41 percent, while in the same poll conducted last month, the pair were tied at 42 percent. 

Meanwhile, Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson stands at 8 percent support, unchanged from last month, and Green Party nominee Jill Stein saw a 1 point increase in support, to 3 percent. 

In a two-way match-up between Clinton and Trump, Clinton leads 49 percent to 43 percent. 

It’s the first poll from CBS News and The New York Times since the first presidential debate, which took place on Sept. 26. 

The poll shows the debate had a more positive impact on voters’ views of Clinton than on Trump. 

Likely voters who watched the first debate are twice as likely to say it made them think better of Clinton (32 percent) than worse (16 percent). For Trump, only 10 percent of likely voters said the debate made them think better of the GOP presidential nominee, while 36 percent said it made them think worse of him. 

Meanwhile, Trump continues to lead among men, 49 percent to 38 percent, while Clinton maintains her lead among women, 51 percent to 33 percent. 

Trump still leads about white voters, 49 percent to 37 voters, while black voters overwhelmingly favor Clinton, 80 percent to 7 percent. 

The poll was conducted by telephone Sept. 28–Oct. 2 among 1,501 adults, including 1,217 registered voters, and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
