Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump are both expected to speak next month at the annual Al Smith Dinner in New York just one day after their final debate-stage clash.
{mosads}The dinner, which will be held Oct. 20, is named after former New York Gov. Alfred E. Smith, the first Catholic nominee for president.
“The presidential nominees will share the dais with Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York,” the Archdiocese of New York said in a statement obtained by the Religion News Service, as reported by the Washington Examiner.
“And they will deliver the evening’s speeches in the spirit of collegiality and good humor that has become a hallmark of the gala.”
The event is held at the Waldorf Astoria and individual tickets cost $3,000.
The dinner “honors a cause that transcends the polarizing political rhetoric of the day and exemplifies the vision of Gov. Alfred E. Smith, known as ‘The Happy Warrior’ for his ability to maintain his positive outlook even as he tackled the pressing social issues of his day,” the statement said.
Trump and Clinton will speak at the white-tie event one day after the third and final presidential debate and just weeks before the general election in November.
President Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney headlined the event during the 2012 election, and Obama and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) spoke at the dinner in 2008.
