Clinton, Trump tied in Iowa, Grassley leads in Senate race

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are tied in the swing state of Iowa, a new poll released Monday finds. 

{mosads}The Loras College poll shows Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, and Trump, the Republican nominee, tied with 38 percent support among likely voters. 

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson has 9 percent support and Jill Stein of the Green Party has 1 percent. 

“Any advantage Clinton had over the summer has certainly evaporated,” said Christopher Budzisz, an associate professor of politics and director of the Loras College Poll.

“Donald Trump has been able to widen his appeal in the past several weeks, and many see Iowa as a prime electoral pick-up opportunity for the Republican candidate.”

Clinton had a 13-point lead over Trump in the same poll conducted in June. 

“Times have certainly changed in the presidential race here in Iowa, and Trump has come from behind to draw the race even,” Budzisz said.

“Iowa will continue to draw attention as it presents one of the few states either candidate could win come November.”

The survey shows Clinton continues to lead with female voters, 42 percent to 33 percent, while Trump commands a similar advantage among male voters, 44 percent to 33 percent. 

Clinton leads among those aged 18–34, the poll finds, 41 percent to 33 percent. 

But Trump leads among those who are 64 or older, 45 percent to 34 percent. 

In keeping with previous polls, Clinton continues to do best with those who have a college or graduate degree, while Trump succeeds with voters who have a high school degree.
