Poll: Clinton leads Trump in Virginia

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton leads Republican nominee Donald Trump in Virginia, according to a new survey of likely voters by the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University.

{mosads}In a head-to-head matchup, Clinton is favored by 48 percent of likely voters in Virginia, and Trump is backed by 38 percent.

In a four-way matchup, the Democratic nominee’s lead over Trump drops to 6 points, 39 percent to 33 percent.

Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson is backed by 15 percent of respondents, while Green Party nominee Jill Stein and independent candidate Evan McMullin are both backed by 3 percent of likely voters.

In the two-way matchup, Clinton leads Trump among women by 28 points, 57 percent to 29 percent. Trump, however, has an advantage among men, 49 percent to 37 percent.

The poll finds 93 percent of Democrats say they are supporting Clinton, compared to 87 percent of Republicans who say they’re backing Trump.

Another 5 percent of Republicans say they are casting their ballot for the Democratic nominee, and 1 percent of Democrats are supporting Trump.

Clinton leads among white, college-educated voters, 45 percent to 40 percent, and Trump has a large advantage among noncollege educated white voters, 64 percent to 24 percent.

According to the poll, 53 percent of Virginia voters think Trump is racist. A majority of voters also think Clinton can’t be trusted with classified information.

More voters also think Clinton would make a better commander in chief than Trump. The poll finds 50 percent of voters think Clinton would make a better commander in chief, and 40 percent of likely voters in Virginia say the same of Trump.

The survey was conducted from Sept. 15 to 23 among 1,003 likely Virginia voters. The margin of error is 3.9 percentage points.

According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls in Virginia, Clinton has a 6.9-point lead over her Republican rival, 46.9 percent to 40 percent.
