Obama spokesman: Kaine would make good VP
White House press secretary Josh Earnest on Wednesday volunteered Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) as someone who President Obama believes would make a good running mate for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
{mosads}The spokesman confirmed reports that Obama and Clinton have spoken about potential vice presidential picks, which includes at least two Cabinet secretaries — Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack — who were both mentioned by talk radio host and Hill columnist Bill Press.
“It seems natural that Secretary Clinton might consult President Obama about the process,” Earnest said.
Clinton is expected to make her vice presidential decision as soon as Friday.
While he acknowledged Obama might not have a specific favorite, Earnest cited Kaine as someone whom the president views as well suited to join Clinton on the Democratic ticket.
Though the Virginia senator does not serve in the administration, Obama considers him as “one of his” due to Kaine’s early support for the president’s 2008 campaign and his past service as Democratic National Committee chairman.
“All of these individuals have fulfilled their responsibilities quite well,” Ernst said. “They have distinguished themselves, and the president is pleased that all three of them have distinguished themselves in serving the public while President Obama has been in office.”
