McCain calls for criminal investigation into EPA

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is calling for a criminal investigation into the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over a hazardous mine spill last summer, according to the Associated Press.

{mosads}”What is clear now is that not enough has been done,” McCain said during a hearing in Phoenix on Friday.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that a [Justice Department] criminal investigation is merited and must now occur.”

The Arizona senator accused EPA officials of negligence, saying they were aware of the potential for such a spill and failed to conduct proper testing.

An investigation by the Interior Department concluded that the EPA was to blame for the massive Gold King Mine spill in Colorado, which leaked 3 million gallons of dangerous sludge into a tributary of the Animas River.
