New York state’s attorney general on Wednesday announced he is opening an investigation into the New York City Board of Elections after reports of voting irregularities in Tuesday night’s primary.
{mosads}Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement he is “deeply troubled by the volume and consistency of voting irregularities, both in public reports and direct complaints to my office’s voter hotline, which received more than one thousand complaints in the course of the day yesterday. That’s why today, we have opened an investigation into alleged improprieties in yesterday’s voting by the New York City Board of Elections.
“If necessary, we will initiate inquiries in additional areas of the State where voting irregularities appeared unusually high.”
Before the polls closed Tuesday night, Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders blasted the voting irregularities, citing reports that voters had trouble accessing polls or had been wrongfully removed from voter rolls.
“It is absurd that in Brooklyn, New York, where I was born, tens of thousands of people, as I understand it, have been purged from the voting rolls,” Sanders said. “It’s a little bit crazy that in upstate New York they open the polls at noon. What happens to people who get up early in the morning and have to go to work?”
New York City comptroller Scott Stringer also announced an audit of the Board of Elections over reports of irregularities.
