About 21 percent of respondents said they are still undecided in the race, and another 36 percent said they could still change their minds before ballots are cast.
There are 59 Republican delegates up for grabs in Michigan, making it an important primary after the Super Tuesday contests of March 1.
Although Trump leads in the poll, it also finds that he maight not have much room to improve.
Among undecided voters, 46 percent said they have a negative impression of the billionaire businessman.
“Republicans either love him or hate him,” said Richard Czuba, who conducted the poll. “Those undecided voters don’t like him.”
Czuba added that the evenly split candidates fighting for second place could secure a win for Trump in the state.
“The problem for all of the other candidates is they’re all fighting to be the bridesmaid right now, but they’re not fighting to be the bride,” he said.
The Detroit News/WDIV-TV poll surveyed by telephone 600 likely GOP primary voters Feb. 14–16 and has margin of error of 4 percent.
