Kasich: Debates are the ‘dumbest’

Republican presidential hopeful John Kasich isn’t a fan of the GOP debates, which have attracted huge audiences and featured high-profile brawls among candidates.

“Debates are the dumbest thing going,” the Ohio governor said Wednesday night on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” “It’s sort of like, explain your entire life’s story in 30 seconds.”

{mosads}Kasich explained that he thinks the debates have become focused on negative attacks while he is interested in maintaining a positive campaign, to which Colbert joked that he “shut up!”

Kasich is currently polling near the bottom of the pack in South Carolina ahead of Saturday’s GOP primary, after taking second place in New Hampshire earlier this month.

The governor has picked up several newspaper endorsements around the country, as well as the backing of The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., Wednesday.

Kasich, who previously described last weekend’s testy debate as “a demolition derby,” asked on Colbert’s show, “If I can’t win by being fundamentally positive, what’s the point in winning?”
