Ex-Huckabee aide joins Cruz campaign

Alice Stewart, a former top aide to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, has joined Sen. Ted Cruz’s (Texas) Republican presidential campaign, The Hill has confirmed.

Stewart, who stepped down as Huckabee’s communications director less than a month ago, will serve as a senior adviser for Cruz, according to the Texas Tribune, which first reported the news.

{mosads}She served as Huckabee’s press secretary in 2008 when he won the Iowa caucuses and several other states as well as press secretary during former Sen. Rick Santorum’s (Pa.) 2012 bid.

Huckabee brushed off her departure last month, saying it wasn’t indicative of broader campaign trouble, though reportedly cut salaries for senior campaign staff in the wake of poor polling.

The addition of Stewart to Cruz’s campaign comes as the Texas senator has become the favorite to win the Feb. 1 caucuses in Iowa and is polling in the top-tier in other early voting states.
