Unknown truck driver wins nomination for Democratic Miss. gov

Robert Gray’s win in the Democratic primary for Mississippi governor surprised everyone — including himself.

Gray, a 46-year-old truck driver, didn’t even vote for himself, saying he was too busy, according to The Associated Press.

{mosads}Despite being mostly unknown in the state, he defeated party-backed front-runner Vicki Slater in the Tuesday election.

“It wasn’t too much campaigning,” Gray told Mississippi Public Broadcasting of his win.

He will go on to face incumbent Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant in the general election this fall.

Gray told the AP his platform includes expanding Medicaid and increasing funding for education and infrastructure.

Though he’s never worked in politics, he said he listens to a lot of public radio while driving his rig — a job he’s held since the 1990s.
