Bill Clinton to swear in de Blasio as NYC mayor

Former president Bill Clinton will swear in Bill de Blasio as Mayor of New York City on Wednesday, de Blasio’s transition team announced Saturday.

Former secretary of State and possible presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will also attend the ceremony, with her husband.

{mosads}The Clintons have long ties to de Blasio. The mayor-elect was a regional director at the Department of Housing and Urban Development during Bill Clinton’s presidency and served as campaign manager for Hillary’s successful Senate bid in 2000.

De Blasio said in a statement Saturday that he is “honored” the Clintons will be in attendance.

“Wednesday’s ceremony will be an event for every New Yorker from all five boroughs, and Chirlane and I couldn’t be more excited to have President Clinton and Secretary Clinton stand with us.” 

Many political observers see de Blasio as leading a liberal resurgence in the Democratic Party, a trend that Hillary — seen as more centrist — might want to connect herself to ahead of a presidential run.

In October, she headlined a fundraiser for de Blasio’s mayoral campaign that raised more than $1 million.

In an hour-long ceremony, Clinton will swear in the 109th mayor of New York with a Bible once owned by former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
