Dem super-PAC hits Coffman on immigration

The super-PAC working to elect Democrats to the House is hitting Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) on immigration reform with a new online ad that targets Hispanic voters.

{mosads}The House Majority PAC ad, shared first with The Hill, highlights the fact that Coffman has not yet signed a discharge petition aimed at forcing a vote on a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

Though nearly every Democrat in the House has signed the discharge petition, no Republicans have, and many in the GOP have indicated no desire to tackle the controversial issue in an election year.

It directs viewers to CoffmanTooExtreme.com, where they can sign a petition to “tell Rep. Mike Coffman to stop standing with the extremists and start standing with Colorado,” and sign a petition urging him to support a vote on reform.

The online ad buy is backed by just $35,000, but it’s not the first time the group has attacked him on immigration reform.

Democrats see the issue as potent in the district, which is about 20 percent Hispanic, especially against Coffman, who was previously staunchly opposed to immigration reform before shifting early last year.

Matt Thornton, communications director for House Majority, said that shift wasn’t enough for voters.

“Mike Coffman has flipped his position on immigration reform to appease his constituents, but now that he has an opportunity to actually do something, he refuses to act,” he said. “We will make sure the voters in Colorado realize just how shallow Coffman’s words are on immigration reform.”

Coffman is one of the nation’s most vulnerable Republican incumbents and is facing a top-tier Democratic challenger in former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff.
