The deep-pocketed EMILY’s List is endorsing former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel (D) in her campaign to replace retiring Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), the group announced Friday morning.
{mosads}”Wendy Greuel has demonstrated outstanding leadership as a public servant fighting for education, small businesses, and government accountability for California families,” said EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock. “The EMILY’s List community — now more than three million members strong — is excited to support Wendy’s campaign to be a strong voice for the women and families of California’s 33rd congressional district.”
The move comes as no surprise. The group, which backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, also endorsed Greuel in her losing 2013 campaign to be mayor of Los Angeles, and the other candidate they might have backed in the race, attorney and activist Sandra Fluke (D), has decided to run for the state Senate instead.
The organization’s backing will help propel Greuel’s fundraising in the heavily Democratic district. Her main opponent is California state Sen. Ted Lieu (D).
Greuel has also secured endorsements from former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D), California Attorney General Kamala Harris (D), and Reps. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.) and Tony Cardenas (D-Calif.). Lieu has endorsements from Reps. Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.).
