A major conservative advocacy group is hitting vulnerable Democratic House members on ObamaCare with a new series of Web ads themed around the “Cyber Monday” shopping holiday.
It’s American Action Network’s (AAN) first Web campaign focused on the law this cycle, and marks an escalation of attacks for the group — and a warning to Democrats that even attempts to improve the law can’t insulate them from its political fallout.
{mosads}According to details shared first with The Hill, the group is hitting Democratic Reps. Scott Peters (Calif.), Brad Schneider (Ill.), Carol Shea-Porter (N.H.), Patrick Murphy (Fla.) and John Barrow (Ga.), as well as Democrat Erin Bilbray, who is challenging Rep. Joe Heck (R-Nev.), with the ads.
They’re targeting shoppers and feature snow-covered ornaments and beribboned gift boxes, the latter reading “Erin Bilbray, running from ObamaCare” and “Don’t buy it.”
Clicking on the ads bring viewers to standalone sites featuring news clips and voting records highlighting each of the Democrats’ support for ObamaCare.
The ads are timed to coincide with “Cyber Monday,” the major online discount shopping day, and follow a similar series of ads from the National Republican Senatorial Committee that were Black Friday-themed.
The Democratic Party has suffered a drop in polls and widespread backlash from Americans following the botched rollout of ObamaCare, and Republicans believe the political fallout could haunt Democrats in the 2014 elections.
Democrats faced weeks of attacks when it was revealed that assurances from President Obama and Democratic lawmakers that Americans could keep their plans if they liked them were erroneous.
A Republican backed-fix to allow Americans to keep their health insurance under ObamaCare passed the House with significant Democratic support earlier this month, including the votes of all five Democratic lawmakers targeted by the AAN.
But despite Democratic efforts to fix parts of the law, Republicans have pledged to stay on offense on ObamaCare, charging that Democrats who voted for the law should own its consequences.
AAN Communications Director Dan Conston said that Americans would know better than to believe Democrats’ “dishonest spin” on the law.
“Americans know a bad deal when they see one. ObamaCare champions are running for cover after selling Americans a bag full of broken promises, but Americans aren’t foolish enough to buy their dishonest spin,” he said.
