Governor races

Abbott keeps Texas governor’s seat in GOP hands

Republican Greg Abbott easily won the race to become the governor-elect of Texas on Tuesday.

The Lone Star State’s three-term attorney general defeated Wendy Davis, a state senator, in his bid to win the governor’s mansion.

Abbott, who had a 17-point lead heading into Tuesday’s election, will continue 20 years of GOP control of the governor’s office.

{mosads}Davis, who had appeared to be a rising Democratic star a year ago after a filibuster on the Senate floor on abortion, simply couldn’t shake the state’s longtime trend of Republican control.

The candidates spent upward of $90 million on the first race without an incumbent governor since 1990, according to news reports.

Abbott has said he would focus on keeping taxes low and nixing “job-killing” regulations.
