Trump notches win in Rhode Island
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is projected to win the Rhode Island primary.
NBC News called the race for Trump at about 8:25 p.m. EDT, after polls closed in the state at 8 p.m. ABC and Fox News followed shortly after.
Rhode Island offers 19 delegates on a proportional basis.
{mosads}Trump fought for support in Rhode Island, holding a rally in the state Monday in which ditched attempts at a more genteel tone and reverted to insulting his rivals and mocking rival John Kasich’s eating style.
“I have never seen a human being eat in such a disgusting fashion,” the GOP presidential front-runner said to a laughing, cheering crowd.
Despite the lack of statewide polling in Rhode Island leading into Tuesday night, Trump was an overwhelming favorite to win given his strength in neighboring states.
Rhode Island leans heavily Democratic at the national level, with President Obama beating Republican nominee Mitt Romney by 27 percentage points in the 2012 election.
