Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) will make a pitch to donors this weekend on behalf of his son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), in his 2016 GOP presidential bid, The Washington Post reports

“I know the media likes to play this little game where they pit us, or certain views, against each other,” the elder Paul will write based on excerpts published by the Post.

{mosads}”Don’t fall for it. They’re trying to manufacture story lines at liberty’s expense. You’ve spent years seeing how the media treated me. They aren’t my friends and they aren’t yours,” Paul will add.

Ron Paul, who ran for president three times, has so far played little role publicly on behalf of his son’s campaign since it was launched in early April, saying a couple of months into the bid that he didn’t want to “distract from what he’s doing.”

Meanwhile, Rand Paul has sought to recapture ground in polls while being outraised by the likes of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), among others. Paul is in eighth place nationally in the RealClearPolitics average of polls.

In his pitch, Ron Paul writes, “unlike other candidates, Rand isn’t depending on Wall Street fat-cats and banksters who want more special treatment, bailouts and stimulus packages to bankroll his candidacy.”

The elder Paul also directly addresses the suggestion that his son has moved away from his libertarian roots amid a White House bid where he has sought broader party appeal.
“There is not one candidate who has run for president in my lifetime who can say they fully share my commitment to liberty, Austrian economics, small government, and following the Constitution, than my son, Rand Paul,” Ron Paul’s email adds, according to the Post.
