Romney wins Vermont primary

Mitt Romney won the Vermont primary on Super Tuesday. 

The television news networks projected Romney’s victory about 35 minutes after the polls closed at 7 p.m. ET.

With 72 percent of precincts reporting, Romney was winning with more than 40 percent of the vote. Ron Paul was in second with 25 percent, trailed closely by Rick Santorum with 23 percent. Newt Gingrich had 8 percent of the vote.

{mosads}The victory was an easy one for Romney given the state’s large population of centrists and proximity to Romney’s home state of Massachusetts. 

A recent Castleton Polling Institute survey on Monday found Romney leading the field in the state with 34 percent of the vote.

Vermont will award a total of 17 delegates at the Republican National Convention.
