Poll: Support for stricter gun laws rises to highest level in decades
A new poll finds that the number of Americans who say they support stricter gun laws is at the highest level since 1993.
Seventy percent of respondents in a CNN poll released early Sunday support stricter gun laws following the deadly Florida high school shooting. That percentage is up from 52 percent who said last October that they would favor stronger legislation.
Just 27 percent in the new poll say they oppose stricter gun laws.
A majority of people who live in gun-owning households, 57 percent, favor stricter gun laws, pollsters found.
A vast majority of Democrats, 93 percent, support stricter gun laws, while 49 percent of Republicans do, according to the survey. {mosads}
The poll also finds that 87 percent of respondents support a law that would bar convicted felons and people with mental health problems from owning guns, and 71 percent support a law that would raise the legal age for buying any kind of gun to 21.
The poll was conducted from Feb. 20 to 23 among 1,016 adults. The margin of error is 3.7 points.

It comes after 17 people were killed earlier this month when a gunman opened fire at a high school in Florida.
Since the shooting, students have become vocal advocates for gun control, demanding that lawmakers take action to prevent future school shootings.
