Colbert mocks Florida lawmakers for cracking down on porn but not acting on assault weapons

CBS host Stephen Colbert mocked lawmakers in Florida on Wednesday after the state legislature declared pornography a health risk but declined to take up legislation addressing gun control.

The vote took place after the shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead.

“Last night, with Parkland students watching from the gallery, state House members voted down a motion to debate an existing bill that would ban assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines,” Colbert said in his monologue to boos from his audience.

“So what legislation did they focus on instead?” Colbert continued. “A bill that declares porn dangerous.”

“What do you have against teenagers?” he asked, to laughs. “First you won’t do anything about guns, now you’re taking away their porn. ‘What are you doing in there? You better be loading a gun, young man!'” he added, impersonating a father knocking on his son’s door.

A resolution passed Tuesday in Florida’s House of Representatives declared pornography a public health risk that leads to “deviant, problematic or dangerous sexual behavior,” according to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Ross Spano (R).

Parkland students have become vocal advocates against gun violence in the days since a mass shooter attacked the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and killed 17 students and faculty members.

On Wednesday, at a CNN town hall, students from the school confronted lawmakers including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R).

“Sen. Rubio, can you tell me right now that you will not accept a single donation from the NRA in the future?” one student asked.

“I do support the Second Amendment. And I also support the right of you and everyone here to be able to go to school and be safe,” Rubio responded. “And I do support any law that would keep guns out of the hands of a deranged killer, and that’s why I support the things I have stood for and fought for.”
