Anti-Semitic post prompts Virginia Republicans to split with controversial GOP figure: report

Virginia Republicans are working to force controversial party figure Fredy Burgos off the state central committee after a post on Facebook that was viewed as anti-Semitic, according to the Washington Post.

In the post, Burgos quoted founding father John Jay, writing that it is the privilege of a Christian nation “to select and prefer Christian leaders.”

Burgos is campaigning for Tim Hannigan, a candidate running to be the chairman of the Fairfax County Republican Party. His opponent is Mike Ginsberg, who the Post reported is Jewish.

Those pressing for Burgos to resign from his post include Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.), who is one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the House.

She said Burgos’s “bigoted, backwards views have no place in the Republican Party — the party of Lincoln and Reagan.”

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington has called for Burgos to be removed.

Burgos has yet to comment on whether he will resign but, according to the Post, the Virginia GOP has begun the process to forcibly remove him.
