US Embassy in Haiti temporarily closed after anti-Trump protests

The U.S. Embassy in Haiti was temporarily closed on Monday, The Associated Press reported, after demonstrators took to the streets in Port-au-Prince to protest President Trump.

More than 1,000 people reportedly marched toward the embassy, which was blocked off by barricades.

The protest came after Trump reportedly said during a White House meeting that Haiti, El Salvador and some African nations were “shithole countries.”

Trump faced widespread backlash and accusations of racism after the reported comments.

The president has pushed back against the reports and denied he is racist.

This past weekend, hundreds of Haitian-Americans and Haitians living in New York City protested outside of Trump Tower.

Demonstrators waived Haitian flags, beat drums and blew horns while chanting slogans at the president.

Earlier this month, hundreds of protesters gathered near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
