Ga. lawmaker: Dem criticizing Confederate monuments could ‘go missing’

Georgia state Rep. Jason Spencer (R) said a former Democratic lawmaker might “go missing” in a nearby swamp if she continues to criticize Confederate statues.

Spencer originally posted a photo with a memorial for Confederate President Jefferson Davis, saying that the statue was Georgia’s history and used the hashtag #DealWithIt in a Facebook post first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

His post prompted a response from former Georgia state Rep. LaDawn Blackett Jones (D), who said that he should take the photo “before it is torn down.”

She also told him to “put your hoods and your tiki torches away,” referring to the rally earlier this month in Charlottesville, Va., where white supremacists holding tiki torches and Ku Klux Klan members protested the removal of a Confederate monument.

{mosads}The two launched into a back-and-forth in Facebook comments that included Jones stating that the statues will eventually come down, and Spencer warning her not to criticize the Confederate monuments.

“I can guarantee you won’t be met with torches but something a lot more definitive,” Spencer said. “People in South Georgia are people of action, not drama.”

He added that those who criticize the state’s Confederate history “will go missing in the Okefenokee” because people in south Georgia “will not put up with it like they do in Atlanta.”

“Too many necks they are red around here,” he wrote. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you about ‘em.”
