Award-winning playwright writing production about Trump

Tony Kushner, the playwright who won a Tony and Pulitzer for his 1993 play “Angels in America,” is working on a play about President Trump.

Kushner told the Daily Beast in an interview that the play will not focus on Trump’s presidency. Rather, it will be set two years before the 2016 presidential campaign.

The play, he said, is still in its early stages of development, adding that “it feels very soon” to start tackling the intricacies of the real estate mogul’s presidential bid.

{mosads}“The nightmare is in high gear. It certainly feels like folly that I or anyone else has a definitive understanding or comprehensive understanding of what’s going on,” he said. “I have my guesses like everyone else has, but it will take some time and a lot will depend on how it is resolved.”

Trump’s character will not hinge on symbolism or metaphor, like many of the characters in “Angels in America,” Kushner said. As a character, Trump “is very boring,” he said.

“He just runs round and round in his grim little well saying the same things over and over again,” Kushner said. “Occasionally he will write or say something funny like ‘Covfefe,’ but the last five months have been astonishingly one-note and flat.”

“He is precisely the kind of person who you would not want to be stuck next to at a party,” he added. “You can’t get away from how grotesque he is. [Former President] Reagan was really disgusting too, but not as venal.”
